The author of Genesis describes the birth of woman as creating for the first human an כְּנֶגְדּֽוֹ׃ עֵ֖זֶר or “ezer kenegdo”. Most adults in the church have heard this word defined as “helper” or “helpmate”. The phrase is even the origin of the name “complementarian”, which describes the subservient nature of women to men (specifically, wives to hubands).
